Parties and Contract Type
This Employment Contract is between the Employer, a licensed dog breeding business raising pedigree or specialty breed dogs for sale to approved homes, and the Employee. The business operates a breeding facility with whelping areas, puppy socialization spaces, and veterinary care coordination, requiring kennel staff, breeding managers, and puppy socializers who prioritize animal welfare and breed standards.
Employment is permanent from the Start Date under applicable employment law and animal welfare regulations. This contract is the full agreement. The breeding business operates under a local authority breeding licence with conditions governing the number of breeding dogs, facility standards, and welfare protocols.
Working with breeding dogs involves caring for pregnant and nursing bitches, assisting with whelping, hand-rearing puppies when necessary, maintaining kennel hygiene, and ensuring compliance with breeding licence conditions. The Employee acknowledges these responsibilities and the emotional demands of animal husbandry.
Term, Probation, and Probation Review
Probation runs for three months. The Employer evaluates the Employee's kennel management skills, understanding of canine reproductive health and whelping support, puppy socialization technique, compliance with the facility's welfare protocols, and ability to identify health concerns in dogs and puppies that require veterinary attention.
Statutory notice applies during probation. A review at six weeks covers the Employee's kennel cleanliness standards, feeding and exercise routine adherence, confidence handling breeding dogs of different temperaments, and record-keeping accuracy for health checks, vaccinations, and microchipping.
Permanent employment follows satisfactory probation. Extension may apply if the Employee has not yet experienced a full breeding cycle from mating through to puppy placement, or requires further training on neonatal puppy care and buyer screening procedures.
Duties, Role, and Exclusivity
The Employee cares for adult dogs and puppies, assists with whelping, maintains kennel facilities, socializes puppies, and supports buyer enquiries. Outside involvement in dog breeding or competing kennel operations requires the Employer's written consent.
Remuneration, Benefits, and Pay
Salary is paid monthly in arrears. On-site accommodation may be provided for staff who need to be present for overnight whelping monitoring, with its value treated per statutory accommodation offset rules. The Employer covers veterinary handling training costs.
Working Time, Location, and Hours
The Employee works at the breeding facility. Early morning and evening kennel duties are standard for feeding and exercise rounds. During whelping periods, overnight monitoring shifts may be required. Weekend care duties are shared on a rota basis.

A dog breeding business employment contract must address industry-standard working patterns, health and safety obligations, and any required certifications or training. Restrictive covenants like non-compete and non-solicitation clauses need to be calibrated to dog breeding business market norms to be enforceable.
