Parties and Contract Type
This Employment Contract is between the Employer, a mortuary facility providing post-mortem care, body storage, preparation, and release services for hospitals, coroners, funeral directors, and families, and the Employee. The mortuary operates under health authority or independent licence, employing anatomical pathology technicians, mortuary assistants, and administrative staff who handle deceased persons with professional care and regulatory compliance.
Employment is permanent from the Start Date under applicable employment law and mortuary regulations. This contract is the complete agreement.
Mortuary work involves handling deceased persons, assisting with post-mortem examinations, operating refrigeration and storage systems, managing chain of custody documentation, and working in an environment that requires emotional resilience. The Employee commits to maintaining all required certifications and occupational health standards.
Term, Probation, and Probation Review
Probation runs for three months. The Employer evaluates the Employee's competence in deceased handling and identification procedures, assistance during post-mortem examinations, compliance with infection control protocols (including handling of high-risk cases), and accuracy in maintaining the mortuary register and release documentation.
Statutory notice applies during probation. A review at six weeks addresses the Employee's technical proficiency, emotional coping strategies, relationship with pathologists and coroner's officers, and compliance with evidence preservation procedures in forensic cases.
Permanent employment follows satisfactory probation. Extension may be offered if the Employee is completing an APT qualification or requires further supervised experience with complex or forensic post-mortem procedures.
Duties, Role, and Exclusivity
The Employee receives, stores, and prepares deceased persons, assists with post-mortem examinations, maintains the mortuary facility, and completes chain of custody documentation. Outside mortuary work requires the Employer's written consent.
Remuneration, Benefits, and Pay
Salary is paid monthly in arrears. Enhanced rates apply for weekend and bank holiday on-call duties. The Employer provides all PPE, scrubs, and occupational health surveillance including hepatitis B vaccination.
Working Time, Location, and Hours
The mortuary operates during standard hours with on-call availability for emergency admissions. The Employee works from the mortuary facility. Out-of-hours callouts for police or coroner cases may be required on a rota basis.

Why mortuary businesses need a employment contract
Mortuary employees often handle sensitive information, operate specialised equipment, or interact directly with customers, making role-specific employment contracts essential. A mortuary employment contract must address industry-standard working patterns, health and safety obligations, and any required certifications or training. Restrictive covenants like non-compete and non-solicitation clauses need to be calibrated to mortuary market norms to be enforceable.
