Parties and Contract Type
This Employment Contract is between the Employer, a hair salon providing cutting, colouring, styling, and treatment services to clients from its salon premises, and the Employee. The salon employs stylists, colourists, apprentices, and front-of-house staff, delivering services that range from routine cuts to complex colour corrections and bridal styling.
Employment is permanent from the Start Date under the employment laws of the applicable jurisdiction. This contract constitutes the entire agreement.
Salon work involves prolonged standing, handling chemical products (bleach, permanent wave solutions, colour developers), operating heated styling tools, and building a personal client book that drives repeat business. The Employee commits to maintaining their professional standards and any required hairdressing qualifications.
Term, Probation, and Probation Review
A three-month probation period applies. The Employer evaluates the Employee's cutting technique, colour formulation accuracy, blow-dry and styling quality, client consultation skills, and ability to manage a column of appointments with minimal overruns while maintaining service quality.
Statutory notice applies during probation. A review at six weeks covers the Employee's rebooking rate, retail product recommendation success, client feedback, and compliance with patch testing protocols for colour services.
Permanent employment follows successful probation. Extension is available if the Employee is completing an advanced colour qualification, bridal styling certification, or apprenticeship NVQ that extends beyond three months.
Duties, Role, and Exclusivity
The Employee cuts, colours, and styles clients' hair according to consultation agreements, maintains their station, and recommends retail products. Accepting private clients outside the salon or working at a competing salon requires the Employer's written consent.
Remuneration, Benefits, and Pay
Salary is paid monthly in arrears. Commission on service revenue and retail sales may supplement base pay per the scheme in Schedule 2. Staff receive discounted salon services and product. The Employer funds CPD courses and advanced technique training.
Working Time, Location, and Hours
The salon operates six days a week, with late-night opening on selected weekdays. The Employee works from the salon premises on a rota basis. Saturday is typically the busiest trading day, and attendance is expected.

Why hair salon businesses need a employment contract
Hair Salon employees often handle sensitive information, operate specialised equipment, or interact directly with customers, making role-specific employment contracts essential. A hair salon employment contract must address industry-standard working patterns, health and safety obligations, and any required certifications or training. Restrictive covenants like non-compete and non-solicitation clauses need to be calibrated to hair salon market norms to be enforceable.
