Parties and Contract Type

Fade & Co Barbershop, operating from its licensed premises as a gentlemen's grooming establishment, enters into this Employment Contract with the Employee named in Schedule 1. The business provides haircuts, beard trims, hot towel shaves, and related grooming services, employing barbers, apprentice stylists, and reception staff trained in client-facing hospitality.

The Employee is engaged on a permanent basis from the Start Date. This contract is governed by the employment laws of the jurisdiction in which the barbershop operates and replaces all prior arrangements, whether verbal or written, relating to the Employee's engagement. Where the barbershop operates a chair rental model for certain stylists, those arrangements are governed by separate self-employment agreements and fall outside the scope of this contract.

Barbershop work involves standing for extended periods, handling sharp instruments including straight razors and clippers, and maintaining strict hygiene standards between clients. Both parties acknowledge these occupational realities. The Employer commits to providing appropriate personal protective equipment, and the Employee agrees to follow all health and safety procedures governing the use of cutting tools and chemical products.

Term, Probation, and Probation Review

A three-month probationary period applies from the Start Date. The Employer will assess the Employee's cutting proficiency across a range of styles including fades, tapers, and beard sculpting, their ability to build repeat clientele, punctuality for booked appointments, and adherence to the shop's hygiene and sterilisation protocols for tools and workstations.

Statutory minimum notice applies during probation for either party. The Employer will hold a formal review at the six-week mark, covering technical skills, client retention rates, product upselling performance, and overall fit within the shop's culture and team dynamic.

Permanent employment follows satisfactory completion of probation. The Employer may extend the probationary period by up to three months where the Employee requires additional training on specialist techniques such as razor fading, scalp micropigmentation preparation, or hot towel shave protocols.

Duties, Role, and Exclusivity

The Employee performs haircuts, shaves, and grooming services as directed by the shop's appointment schedule. Maintaining a clean workstation, sterilising equipment between clients, and promoting retail grooming products are core duties. Outside barbering work that competes with the Employer requires prior written consent.

Remuneration, Benefits, and Pay

Gross salary is paid monthly in arrears by bank transfer. The Employee may receive commission on retail product sales and tips retained in full where paid directly by clients. Statutory deductions apply to all payments made under this contract.

Working Time, Location, and Hours

Working hours follow the shop's opening schedule, typically including Saturdays and occasional late evening sessions. The Employee's primary workplace is the barbershop premises, with potential attendance at pop-up grooming events as reasonably required by the Employer.

Why barber shop businesses need a employment contract

Barber Shop employees often handle sensitive information, operate specialised equipment, or interact directly with customers, making role-specific employment contracts essential. A barber shop employment contract must address industry-standard working patterns, health and safety obligations, and any required certifications or training. Restrictive covenants like non-compete and non-solicitation clauses need to be calibrated to barber shop market norms to be enforceable.
